Training Announcement for Businesses, Schools, Religious Institutions, Government Agencies, and First Responders

The Brewer Police Department in conjunction with the Penobscot Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is hosting a two day school entitled “School and Workplace Violence: Planning and Response” on August 28-29, 2017.

This course is intended for business managers and owners; school administrators; police agencies; fire agencies; dispatch services; and management of all other organizations such as government entities, churches, and medical centers.

This is an excellent training opportunity that promotes preparedness and inter-cooperation between first responders and businesses, schools, and religious institutions.  A goal of this training is to help businesses and schools to work on their internal processes for security in an effort to become a harder target, reduce victimization, and to prepare potential victims of school and workplace violence to be able to protect themselves until first responders can arrive.  It also encourages collaborative partnerships between first responders, schools, and businesses to enable them to deter, detect, and defend against school and workplace violence.

This course is being taught by the National Tactical Officers Association’s (NTOA) subject matter expert, Don Alwes.  Don Alwes is a police officer and trainer with more than 34 years of law enforcement experience.  He is the current chair of the National Tactical Officers Association Patrol Section, providing instruction in active shooter response and school and workplace violence.  Don also serves as an adjunct instructor for the NRA’s Law Enforcement Division and Kentucky’s Department of Criminal Justice Training.  Don has also taught courses for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors.  Topics of instruction have included active shooter response, rapid deployment, terrorism, homeland security, school and workplace violence, and vulnerability assessment.  Don is a member of the NTOA, the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, the Police Marksman Association and the International Association for Counter-terrorism and Security Professionals.
